pondering a year.

2 0 1 2

changed my life.

i would have never expected this year would contain what it did.

it's interesting looking back a year ago.
i was home in idaho for Christmas break, as usual.
vamping up to go back home to colorado springs.
the place i thought i'd probably be forever.
the place where I was giving myself to a certain dream that I would die for.
the vision that we would partner with Jesus to be adored in every tribe tongue and nation.
i burned with it, and thought i'd be forerunning this movement unto He split the sky to return to His singing Bride.

however, a few months into 2012,
things drastically changed.
and I was needing to make some big decisions.

I felt such a clear invite from Jesus to take some faith fill steps.
to go the opposite direction of the dream.
I listened to Him, trusting that He would cause everything to work out.
I didn't realize that His timing of "working things out" were so painfully slow.
They looked nothing like I thought they would.
I trusted Him though, knowing He knew best.

my whole Christian walk
I have always felt like I would do something that seemed big in my own eyes.
whatever that may be,
preaching to the multitudes,
leading worship in stadiums and a people encountering His presence like never before...
leading an army with courage in the end of the age..
to be the point of the arrow in the end time worship movement..

I feel like God has taken this year to shake my paradigm of what is "big" to Him.

now i sit here.  back in idaho.
it being my official home now
which that in itself, I would have NEVER imagined would ever happen in a million years.

i wake up every day - with not much of an agenda.
i no longer have any programs to develop,
people to lead in worship,
departments to manage,
or movement to give myself to.

i get ready,
make my aero press coffee,
sit on the side of my bed, with the space heater on my feet.
coffee in hand with a soft blanket.
i look out the window,
read the bible slowly,
and posture myself to understand Christianity through the Word.
i close my eyes and aim my heart towards Jesus...
then pick up and head to work, or to a meeting.

my job is no longer to strategize how to train a people to be sent to the nations,
or to facilitate an end times worship movement..
but i am now strategizing on things like how to make a promo video for a high end men's line called Thrux Lawrence that designs and sells a backpack, pant and belt..
i send emails to designers, and I order stamps that cater to expressing sizes on hangtags that label denim attire.  I give input on what leather matches what canvas, and what type of buttons should close up the fly of a hickory striped pant.  yep this is what i do.

wow, Jesus, in 2012, You drastically shifted things.

there was a lot that happened between last year and this very moment.
as many of you know if you've read my earlier posts - so i'll spare you any lengthy repetition...

a little Recap.

Picked up and moved away from Colorado. good bye my dear comrades.

flew to San Diego, stayed 5 weeks with some of my best friends - Ricky & Tiffy.
Lots of eating, watching shows online, and good talks about Jesus, surrendering dreams.

booked a ticket to Idaho to visit my family.

thinking i'd be here for one month - but as time went on He kept telling me to stay.
this summer was much needed time of solitude.
listening to Jesus.
reading His Word with fresh eyes.
and learning to surrender my ideas of ministry to Him.
spending time with my family.
My identity being tested.
Surrendering ministry to God - He wanted me to learn who I was apart from working for a ministry.
Giving myself time to breathe and realize what I really enjoy doing -- which I discovered, i LOVE business, and design.

This time of quieting my heart was so refreshing, yet stretching.
As time went on. I decided that I'd stay through the whole summer, then after that, move back to Colorado. He sure had a different idea.

Summer was closing and I met a couple - Mark and Sidney Launder
who were missionaries from Africa.  I thought I was moving to CO,
but I soon found myself purchasing a ticket to

Ethiopia.
I spent five weeks across the world, living in the midst of poverty and dirt.
this was one of the most stretching, eye opening experiences for me.

learning how much i deal with control.
how much I really love people.
and what is important to God.
I am so glad I went on this trip.

I then flew back to Idaho
I still didn't feel the release to move away from this place.
so I set it in my heart that I would only stay until January.

it was an abrupt culture shock coming back from Africa to Idaho.
It felt like the rubber was hitting the road.
my season of solitude was over, and now what am I to do?
how do you live normal life and keep Jesus as your vision?
how do you not let money become a focus when your purpose for a job is to get a paycheck?
can i trust myself with wealth?
why am i still here in Idaho?  is this a punishment?
I had many moments of wanting to run away when i first got back.
Even to this day I have had moments of wanting to flee...

but weeks into getting back from Ethiopia, God quickly opened doors.
I believe He did this because He knew I was really lacking vision and needing something to keep me here.  He opened up a job for me - doing admin work for Thrux Lawrence, and thrusted me into a community of people at a local church, and gave me the opportunity to serve on a worship team.

the whole summer I was here before I went to Africa,
I didn't put any effort towards getting to know anyone.
building friendships were probably the last thing on my mind.

however, now that i knew I was going to be here for a bit
-- i began to step outside myself to meet people.
I've been blessed with those I've gotten to know so far.

Meet Rach and Jess - i've enjoyed getting to know these lovely women.
As i wrestle with being in Idaho wondering what in the world God has for me here.
It's cool to see that there are people up in the Northwest, who feel that God has called them here,
they desire Jesus and live out Christianity practically.

Rachel the dear friend to the left, is the worship leader at the church I am going to.
She is a strong young woman, extremely meek and HUMBLE,
super teachable, anointed, very honest and raw, and probably one of the funniest ppl I have met.
She's the type of person you wouldn't mind just having around all the time -- VERY enjoyable personality - feels like she could be my sister.
I am confident that one of the main reasons God has me here is because He wanted me to know this sweet friend and support her as she holds the weight of being a worship leader for a big church.
it's been soooooo fun serving along side her on her worship team.

Jess, the lovely friend on the right is a God send.
she has been consistent in being a friend to me.
she understands the grace of God & the gospel probably more than most people I know.
She's extremely passionate, and boldly stands for Truth, no matter the opinion of man
- she hands downs has the qualities of a "faithful witness"
She has spurred me on to dig deep in the word to understand the Gospel.
I can honestly say that crossing paths with her, God has used it to alter my life.
Lord thank You for Jess.

as i am in the vein of talking about friends.
If you've followed my blog you'd probably realize by now this has been one of the most intense shaking years of my life, and there are a few friends who have been like a champion to me in this time of leaping into God's unknown plan for my life.

ang, beth, mary & tiffy
i love you.

your support has held up my arms so many times these past several months.
moments of confusion, passionate opinions, swirly wonders, & jaded outbursts...
you were there to listen, to encourage, and to even tell me things I didn't want to hear.
i'm blessed by your friendship.
I can say so much about each of you.
you've challenged me to listen to God, and Him alone.
To search out Truth, and to press on when things got hard.
i'm forever GRATEFUL for you women.  my heart is warm as I think of you.

current status.
so as i reflect on this past year,
it has had so many different seasons.
highs and lows, stretching and relaxing.

SO much surrendering.
Challenging my identity to the max.
Dealing with being jaded.
Learning to surrender but being willing to dream again...
Learning to let God enjoy me.
Learning how God really designed me, being okay with having fun doing things other than just "ministry work" -- it's fun to buy and sell, to do interior design, to figure what leathers look good with what canvas for a backpacks etc...
Learning that who I am, is not what I do.
That my big ministry type extraordinary impact is not what God thinks is extraordinary.
Learning what the gospel truly means, and who I am truly am in Christ.
Daring to ask questions about the bible, about my walk, about Christianity that I never have before.
Learning to be  Christian in the normal mundane routine of life.

I've had many moments of looking back and being mad at why things shifted in Colorado.
I've cried many tears of sadness, of anger, of confusion - feeling like God tricked me and that He was not letting me be a part of something I gave my blood sweat and tears for...

Why did God shut the doors for the vision to happen in Colorado?

But now, as I look back...
I can say with an honest heart that I am actually thankful He shut those doors.
through what seemed so dramatic at the time, He thrusted me into a year that truly changed my life.

I was going down a path of listening to everyone else's opinions about what God was doing on the earth, and what He had in store for me.
rather than slowing down and listening to Him for myself,
and searching out the Bible for what He is describes and perscribes.

SIDE NOTE:
This is one main thing I would encourage everyone to do.
To slow down and ask,

"My ideas of Christianity, what God is doing on the earth, and who I am to Him,
have I found these in the Word, do I know these things, and give myself to these things because they came from a place of listening to God,
or is it all based on other people's teachings and convictions?"

It's good to search it out yourself - I beckon you.
Slow down, and search it out yourself.

BACK TO PROCESSING.
I was busy strategizing on how to change the world,
but all the while I wasn't paying attention to the people in the world.
Though there were many things that were so positive,
it took God to shut things down in front of me, to make me see the other side of things.

the challenge for me is that what got shut down in CO, is now happening in KC.
It's easy for me to let it go if I try to come up with a reason why it could be unbiblical, or lopsided - and all those thoughts come mainly from being jaded.

But the fact is -- God has all sorts of streams...
My friend Jess actually reminded me of this, and it was helpful.
we are a body..
there are those who are arms,
those who are legs,
those who are fingers and toes...
At this point, I am not functioning as a knee cap...
I always thought I was a knee cap...
So to be mad that I am not a knee cap, and to legitimize those feelings,
and to help me let go of the idea of being a knee cap,
I pretend that the knee cap isn't necessary...
it's ridiculous...

but if I accept that the knee cap IS necessary,
it surfaces those emotions of wishing I was the knee cap,
because I thought I was a knee cap...
and I wrestle with the idea that maybe I am not a knee cap,
or maybe I'm not one right now?
But can God morph someone into a knee cap later?
all that is a mystery to me, so that's one other thing I throw into His hands
and say, I'll keep stepping forward and trusting You.
Right now i'll function like the elbow, hidden away behind this long sleeve shirt.

letting go of something is easier when you have something else to grasp a hold of...
but i have been in a time of letting go of something, and still figuring what I am to embrace.
Life outside of a community of people all going the same direction is quite an interesting ride,
and I am still trying to incline my ear to hear Him in it all..

I know Jesus is my reason.
But what does that really mean?
What does that make my life look like?
All I know is what I have heard others say.
And what I have read so far hasn't been concluded completely in my own understanding.
So each day I just do what I do...
I spend time with Him, I read His Word, and I listen...

I have felt His kindness and patience over my life as I have journeyed on.
He prunes those who bear fruit.
He is kindly coaching me and teaching me.

Through this year, I have realized more than ever how
I have wanted to be a part of something worth while.
Something big, something that would impact the globe.
Yet, he has taken these past couple seasons and used them as a vehicle to show me what is important.

I can sum it up in this quote i read from this book:

"People who really want to make a difference in the world usually do it, in one way or another. And I've noticed something about people who make a difference in the world: They hold the unshakable conviction that individuals are extremely important, that every life matters! They get excited over one smile. They are willing to feed one stomach, educate one mind, and treat one wound. They aren't determined to revolutionize the world all at once; they're satisfied with small changes. Over time, though, the small changes add up. Sometimes they even transform cities and nations, and yes, the world." Katie Davis - Kisses From Katie

I want to to love and notice the people in front of me.
God help me to do this.

Last december I would have had no grid for what God was going to invite me in to.
What He was going to surface in me, and the things He was going to teach me.

As I am here in Idaho.
I've had many moments of wanting to flee to the land of familiar.
You'd think that the land of familiar would be my hometown.
but it's not.
God has me tho.
and i want Him more than I want familiar.

I am wanting to not just choose this life.
I want to live this life.
I want to learn to dream again, while I am here.
I have let my roots go down.
But I need to let them go down deeper.
To embrace the time I have here - however long that may be.
Not just tolerate it.

I love Jesus, and I love His Word.
I have more questions than answers right now.
I am so dreadfully systematic that I want to understand it all.
But I take each step, one by one.

God teach me Your ways.
You are my Shepherd.
I shall not want.
You make me lay down in green pastures.
You lead me besides quiet waters.
You restore my soul.

Jesus, You're leadership is so perfect over my life.
Thank you for this year.
You're aggressive passion for my heart has smitten me.
I will never be the same.

You're forming in me what I could never learn in a book or sermon.
Your ways are marvelous.  Though I cannot see two feet in front of me.
I trust You're surrounding me.

As you have so kindly guided me in 2012.
2013 is Yours as well, have Your way.

friends, I leave you with this.
Slow down, listen to God, search out the Scriptures.
and do as He says.

Amen.

Many Topics of good Swirl

it's been quite some time since i've blogged last.
much has taken place since i have come back from africa.
i won't go into all of it, but here are thoughts if i scan over the past 2 months.

VISION
i am thankful for God's clear leadership in my life.
though at times i felt i was losing vision (this was an intense reality for me to face as I realized that i depended much on my environment and community to keep the vision for me, rather than knowing it myself, or stirring myself up in it on a daily basis)..

as i realized this, i began to take on the responsibility that it is now I who has to cast the vision so i can keep the vision - which i don't know if that was the best way to posture my heart, because i put much weight on me, rather than looking to Jesus to help me...

HE IS PATIENT
as time went on though -- i would have moments where i was so frustrated with myself..
after watching a few hours of TV, going to bed and waking up the next morning - i would be so disappointing that i wasted so much of my time watching television...
i remember saying "Lord, I really do want to be Your friend..."  and i quickly heard Him say back to me "you ARE my friend..."

a few moments like this occurred, noticing that i was clearly being impatient with myself and God was oh so patient...   the analogy i use to explain goes like this:

it's like i am used to sprinting, really fast around a systematic track.
but now i am in the mountains, wearing those snow shoes that look like tennis rackets..
i feel like i should be sprinting, but I am just walking...  it's easy to expect more of myself, but i felt the Lord so kindly reminding me that He is patient with me, and understands that I am in a new environment and learning the swing of things..

time goes on...

WORK & CHURCH
being in idaho was interesting and uncomfortable to me.
i was lost, and wondering what in the world i was doing here.
i know God at least wanted me to stay until January...
so i trucked along, and there were moments of it being quite lonely...
all my community is in other states, and here I am, no friends, no church community, and no job...

but as time went on.
God opened up a part time job for me..
administrating for an high end fashion company - who designs essential menswear.
so that was an extreme blessing to have that open up...

I then had some friends from KC who were up here and they were leading worship at a church in this area...
they asked me to sing with them...

little did i realize God was about to plug me in somewhere.
i think the Lord knew the job that I had was probably not enough to keep me here...

so i went to sing at this church, and in the span of an hour it seemed like things fell right in my lap.
i know i desired to get involved with a church that had small groups - but really this church wasn't on my radar.. don't get me wrong, it was a cool church - but my attention was scoping out other churches.
but in a matter of moments, i was invited to come to worship team practices, and to a small group.

HE PRUNES THE BRANCHES
being invited to help with the worship team was sort of a challenge for me.
being that i had been in a season of rest, i instantly was excited, but then stopped and wondered if
God would want me to do it..    i had this fear that once again I was going to find identity in what I was doing ...   from this mindset it was revealed to me by the Holy Spirit that I have taken these past 8 months as a season of punishment... .  i found identity in what I did, so He was stripping me of all ministry to teach me a lesson...  but it then it was clear to me that He prunes those who bear fruit, in order for them to bear more fruit.. it wasn't punishment, it was actually Him saying "well done."

As i have gotten the chance to play and sing on the worship team, it's been sooooooo much fun...
i absolutely love serving in that capacity.

COMMUNITY

within a week, i met with a few gals who were extremely hospitable and friendly, and it seemed like God plugged me in instantly...   it's actually quite crazy how the doors just flung open in that way...  it seemed daunting for me to get plugged in somewhere, and i have heard stories of people having a hard time getting plugged into a tight community at a church...  so i think in His kindness, He just made it a bit easier for me, knowing that this season was already pretty intense for me...

on that note, in the past month and a half i have been developing some good friendships.
I am EXTREMELY thankful for the people He has crossed my path with, I feel so blessed to run with them.

time goes on..

THE TOPIC OF GRACE?
as i began to make friends with a few of the gals here at the church.
i quickly realized their theology is COMPLETELY different than mine...
like COMPLETELY..

at first this would make me wanna run, but I almost felt like God set me up for this exact thing..
through hearing their hearts, and their views - I could say that we were like black and white...
we all of love Jesus, but things were being exposed in me that seemed to not fully line up with the gospel.

through the kindness of them listening as I spoke out my fears...
I realized much of my relationship with Jesus has been based on myself.
based on my ability to hold on to Him, to be intimate with Him, to be holy etc..

through these convos, and convos with a good friend in KC...  i began to dare to position my heart to have the Lord speak to me about grace..  usually I run from this topic, because I do not want to sin, and I want to be pleasing to Him, so to hear people talking about grace grace grace -- usually makes red flags flash in my mind.... thinking people use grace TO sin....

let me first claim, that I still have no clue what I am talking about in this arena.
i am not claiming one thing or the other -- I am mainly just saying that I am asking the Lord about all this, and reading through Paul's letters to discover for myself, rather than be afraid of the topic....

through the years I have done my best to know God..
I have guarded myself to be pure in all ways possible, striving to be godly...

all the while, if i was dead honest -- i have actually felt quite miserable on the inside.
though it seems that i have joy on the outside.
most times i felt like, and feel like i am disappointing God.
if i don't have a quiet time in the morning, i am absolutely miserable the rest of the day.

i finally had this thought --- maybe something is wrong???  maybe i have something way off?
I have so much fear that I will face God and realize there were depths to know Him, and that I didn't go to those depths....  I can see where I can be lazy in my life, and that laziness that hinders my ability to know Him is my worst enemy...  also, through all this, i also realized that i had, and still have this huge fear of sinning.  rather than saying yes to who I really am in Him, I tend to try to say no to what's really not me...

but then i see people who love God, live holy, and are full of peace and joy....
what am i missing here?

have i been striving for something that is already mine?
I have taught on this message many times...   trying so hard to get what Jesus has already given you...
but i think I am seriously stepping back and noticing that I don't believe the truths of what He has done, and offers us....

so anyway -- i still don't have things figured out, but hearing these friends and realizing how my heart has felt so burdened and heavy for the years - i finally have courage to face this topic and be open to learning what the Lord says about it in His word.

other thoughts...

WAITING
as of recently (today)...  i feel like i am in such a place of lingering and waiting..  like more than ever, i got so impatient with my current season...

today i so desperately wanted to pack up and move to place where I know would be easier (having a good consistent job, and a good consistent community).  but i knew if i picked up and moved, it would be at out of sheer reaction and not action...   it's very uncomfortable being in a place where things are still forming and becoming normal and consistent...   in the area of church, work and community.... all of these take time, and i can be choleric, and time is a roadblock to me....   it's like I wanna fly, but there isn't much wind to pick me up....i don't know when the winds are coming, and that's hard accept... i see winds in the other places (making it tempting for me to just flee to those locations)....  but as of now i have to EMBRACE (not tolerate) the seasons of waiting, knowing that as I wait, my wings are being strengthened so when the winds come, I'll soar...

that is all for now.

goodbye,
court

africa time

Africa. Ethiopia.
A whole different world.

Mountains.
Lush land.
Mud huts.
Bugs.
Beggars.
Dirt.
Poverty.

I have so much to say, but to list every event and emotion would take ages.
Being on the other side of the world has caused my insides to be shaken up.
I hope this blog doesn’t sound too negative, but will just show the wrestle with my own flesh of how I have had quite the culture shock being here..

I apologize in advance for the structure of this blog, it probably won’t be the easiest flowing entry…   but you’ll get an idea of what my time has been like.

ETHIOPIA
Going into mud huts smaller than a single car garage, containing three rooms, one being the living room, another being the kitchen that happens to be a home for the cattle, and the third room being the bedroom, where raw meat hangs from the walls..  dirt floors, sweet tea, and lots of bread.

Buna (coffee) – is so good here.. the home of jo, makes it pleasant to drink.

The smell of rotten butter in the hair of everyone who hugs you.  And yes, everyone who sees you on the street desires to shake your hand and knock right shoulders with you.

red dirt stained hands, flies resting on the finger nails of these dirty happy kids as they take turns to hold and be mesmerized by your porcelain skin..  after holding you for a while, after you walk away you see your skin is now just as red as theirs due to the dirty clay…

You travel the streets, many people walking, some with huge banana leaf backpacks containing heaping loads of produce, others carrying baskets of potatoes on their heads…  donkeys going this way and that, bearing the burden of the day’s goods, and if you don’t watch out they will run into you… yes I have almost been head butted a few times, my friend Sidney actually did just this past week and almost got knocked to the ground.

People are so friendly to each other here – our driver will just yell to another driver, smiling talking back and forth and laughing…  we will then drive off and ask “do you know that guy, is he your friend?”  and they are say “no, I do not know him” … hahah..  so cool how they just treat each other like good’ol friends..   every one is hugging on each other, guys holding hands with guys, girls with girls, and it’s totally normal not sexual, just friendly…  it’s cool to see.

MARKETS.
you look at the market, and there is no sort of structure… just run down stick tents and hills, people on blankets, piling up their produce in little triangle heaps.. the people in the wood tents have no sort of order in presenting their product, just dog piling it all on top of each other..  you walk through broad paths, and skinny paths at this market..  you stagger through the dirt roads dodging the pot holes and dips, some full of extremely smelly garbage, and others full of mud..  if you’re not careful, you’ll slip – believe me, I was one who took the plunge, but thankfully I had wipes in my pocket to quickly wash my hands..

all the while you hear people yelling at you - “frindgee frindgee” almost every 30 seconds.. (not sure how you really spell it, but it means “white foreigner”)…  they either just want you to look at them, because they love being acknowledged by you, or because they want your money…  everyone thinks american’s are wealthy here, so they quadruple their prices in hopes to get a good deal..   it’s a norm to have 5-30 people following you, waiting for the opportune moment to pickpocket you and or beg you for 2 birr (which is probably less than 10 cents)…

it’s interesting, because even some who are well dressed, and put together, when they see you, they instantly put out their hand and say “birr…”  it’s slightly perplexing…  at first you feel bad for the people, but as some are unrelenting, it begins to become easy to cause you to feel a bit annoyed and offended by it…  as they yell “white foreigner, white foreigner” once they see you, you begin to think “wow that seems a bit taboo”…   I’ve thought to myself how in America that would be so socially unacceptable to yell “jap, jap” or “indian indian” – when I saw someone of a different ethnicity walking down the road…   but what do they know?  Know one has probably taught them such things..

CULTURER CONTRAST.
the culture here is so different..
an American and an Ethiopian are like oil and vinager…
as that could be the case for many countries in comparison to america.
there is no grid for each other’s way of thinking…
you must know that they are coming from a whole different playing field, because if you don’t have this as a filter, it’s so easy to be baffled and offended by how things work here. I could state examples but I don’t want to make this thing longer than a novel.

THE BIRR VS. THE BUCK.
Everyone is poor here…  a Ethiopian man makes about 40 birr for a normal work day, which is about $2 for us…  the crazy thing is that their food here is about triple the price of America…  they don’t have money for anything extra around here…  the people wear the same clothes everyday…  the guards I see on the compound wear the same shirts for three weeks straight, and here I am as I am hanging up my laundry on the clothes line, I notice how much I live like royalty compared to these guys…  they don’t have options here…  and almost have too many options to choose from…  it’s a weird reality when you’re faced with it…

SMALL PRICE, BIG BLESSING.
I bought a bag of kids clothes for $7 before I left the states, thinking I could give them to the poor kids around the compound…  it was crazy to see some of these kids in raggedy clothes, stripping their clothes off  as they were so excited to get some thrift store clothes…  one kid, who is the poorest in the whole village with a mother who has HIV… came in, and he was grinning ear to ear as he was now in his fresh new outfit…  we gave him a few more pieces of clothing, knowing he was the poorest of them all…  it was interesting to pull back and think that 3 nice button up shirts, a sweatshirt, a pair of pants, a pair of shorts and socks is probably the most this kid will ever own at one time in his whole life…   and it only cost me about 50 cents…

NO ABUNDANCE.
It cost only $86 a month to send a person to college here…   but for a person to get that much money would take them ages…    it’s just baffling to be in a nation where you hear these guys talking, and it seems like there is no way for them to live in a place of abundance or options…    not that they necessarily need abundance…  but it’s just an interesting thing to consider, as I have a newer iPhone, and it would cost almost 6000 birrr – about 7 months pay for them.   But it’s a norm for us to have an iPhone..

just makes me wonder that even with the little I have in America, where I am putting my money?…   bread isn’t too expensive here – so to even give a family 10 loaves of bread here, it would cost me less than 2 dollars…   anyway – I don’t know what to do with all this reality just yet – I know many who go overseas experience this ordeal and it’s perplexing…   I’m just stating some thoughts right now, and it makes me realize how much I have in comparison to them…

WHERE I AM STAYING
all the while I am staying on a hill that overlooks the town…
as you drive down a long bumpy driveway you come to the gate…
inside these gates is a whole different world than soddo…
it’s like a paradise right in the middle of this poverty stricken city…
the huge garden - lush, bright and perfect.. colorful birds, big and small hovering around the trees…  rather than dogs, they have little deer walking around that they pet and feed cookies, and they have chickens who strut around like the queens of the property… the home beautiful inside and out, one that could easily make it’s appearance in a magazine…

We have workers on the compound, and it’s so funny because I am teaching them Spanish… they think I am such a hoot…  when they see me they will say “hola hola senorita” – hahah… that’s been fun!...

It’s been fun with mark and Sidney – we drink tea every night…  there’s been much conversations filled with tears with Sidney, as I have been stretched tremendously as I have been here…  it’s been cool to watch how Sidney keeps a home, and how she hosts people..  I’m learning a lot from her.  We’ve had fun, reading bed time stories, joking around, painting and singing..

So anyway…

here I am… in Africa.  Swirl swirl…

WHERE’S THE COMFORT?!
though inside the gates of this property it was like night and day compared to the village…   I realized that I was still starved for comfort..

In the beginning of my time here, I realized how I desperately searched for something external to bring me internal comfort…  it felt as if there was nothing in reach around me that could cause rest on the inside… carpet and a nice bathtub/showerhead were things that I instantly began to miss…   the only place of comfort I could find was in my bed…  nice linens, and a fluffy elegant duvet…   the first night I was here, I cried as I realized I had been stripped of everything that could externally make me feel rest internally..     the next morning I just wrapped myself up in my duvet, vainly attempting to feel any sort of comfort.

I wasn’t necessarily ready for a season of trial and stripping..
I just came from a season of richness, resting and peace…
You would think that if I was going to “Africa” – I would have prepped myself for hardship…. call me naïve, but I imagined that it was going to be quite blissful..
However as I felt this season beginning, I have been around the block enough to recognize God inviting me to a place of dependence on Him, and this hardship/discomfort was the kindness of His hand, molding me into what He knew was best…   so i began to brace myself for a season of north winds and stretching…

The days went on – I would drink my buna – and spend time with Jesus..  I was feeling such a nearness of the Lord, and I still do feel it, as it has felt like a fast since I have been here…  not having a cell phone, tv or constant internet has causes for less traffic in my heart, and more room for God…

OLDEN DAY LIVIN.
I am the main cook here, and our supplies are a bit slim (not as slim as the natives, but slim in the sense that we have a few concrete ingredients, and things have to be mixed and made from these ingredients)… so I have to be pretty creative every day to figure what gourmet dish to cook next..  it’s been a good experience to learn what flavors match each other, and the tricks to make things tasty..  every thing takes about twice as long here, driving down roads, making meals, doing laundry..  I have to hang my laundry on a clothesline outside, all the white the huge bumble bees (as big as quarters) swirl all around my head…  I scream and run around as I try to hang my clothes – it’s quite humorous.

OUTSIDE THE GATES
All the while once we would leave the gates, I would get so stretched…
as these people are so dirty, knowing they would go to the bathroom, and their hands were their toilet paper – and all of them want to hold your hand, hug you, and have you near them…  I know that I was a germaphobe, but this environment has highlighted it so intensely..

I would find myself interacting with the people, but anytime I would touch them, once I got into the house I would instantly wash ever inch of my skin that made contact with them..   to add to it, I would change my clothes and throw the ones that were touched, to the side and view them as contaminated…

The more the weeks went on – I knew that this was an issue for me…
One night we were showing the Jesus film, and I had two girls cuddling up by me as I sat in a nice chair I took from the house…  one was at my feet another to my side…  as I watched Jesus who left perfection and glory to walk among dirty uncivilized men, I was like “what the heck am I doing??  Here I am with this girl sitting at my feet, because I don’t want her to give me fleas and contaminate my clothes and skin…. And here is Jesus willing to leave everything to be with us…”  so I then picked the girl up and put her on my lap…  she was surprised I did it…  come to find out this girl is actually very abused by her father, and she seems quite malnourished…   she would look up at me and I would just smile at her…

As I contemplated this – I still had the struggle of being so dirty..
I didn’t want to be like this because I knew Jesus doesn’t think like this…
I could see that I would embrace these people with my arms, but I wanted to get to the point where I was embracing them with my heart…  I felt FAR from this…

As time went on, I began to see my heart becoming a little more willing…
more willing to hug people and love them…. Especially the workers on the compound because I see them day in and day out…  (I still wash my hands constantly…  I hate being dirty…  this is such a whole ordeal God is trying to work on in me).

HOW SHOULD I LIVE?
I have asked Him many questions since I have been here…
too many to list…  but just really wondering what God wants my life to look like practically…   when I read my bible and can’t help but think about the workers on this compound…   do they know how to read the bible?  do they know Jesus wants to spend time with them?  Do they even have a bible?  I am one who thinks on a corporate level, and when I begin to think things like this, I then begin to try to formulate some strategy to reach these people… (which isn’t always a bad thing… but sometimes it can be tempting to get ahead of what God is even trying to tell me)..   often times I have had to slow down and just wait on the Lord to show me what I was to do….  There is so much need in the world, and “need” can’t be what I base my life on, because if I did go that route, I would run myself into the ground trying to disciple every nation on the planet…   I just need to listen to Him, and do what He is saying..

UPS AND DOWNS
Things shift drastically… when I felt progress was going on in my heart… I then had a crazy weekend the other week…  so much disorder, nothing happening as planned, and it was said to me that this is how evenings in Ethiopia go, they never go as planned…  you gotta ride it like a wave…  also after this crazy evening,..

I then went to Ethiopian church.. after a long service of preaching in another language, songs being sung every five minutes and many “amens” – we walked out of service and were invited to a meal after, then to a coffee ceremony, all the while I needed to really go to the restroom but would die if I had to use a squatty potty…  -- then later on we had to show the Jesus film…   I felt like doing one event per day seemed quite stimulating, but three in day seemed over the top…   so after church and the coffee ceremony I showered and just laid in my cozy bed…   just wanting to feel rest…

After two weeks, and feeling like I was getting use to it…  this particular weekend – threw me over the edge…  I all of a sudden got really mad…  I instantly felt fed up with this place…  I hated being dirty, I hated that this country was so poor, and I hated that it was so disorganized.. I hated that the people constantly begged me for birr every time I left the gates…  there was no comfort anywhere, and I was missing America desperately; feeling like it was so much easier there… I just cried, because I was so frustrated with everything..    I went to spend time with Jesus, knowing my attitude was poor…  I just asked the Lord to help me, because I could see that He was so willing, but here I was, feeling way too posh and high maintenance for my own good…  I didn’t know what to do with myself…  I needed God to help me… I so desire to be clean, and not dirty..  I felt so controlled by it…   the next day I just spent more time with Him and He really exposed a spirit of control…  and I know I dealt with this, but man oh man, it went far deeper than I realized…   I know it sounds pretty ridiculous that wanting to be clean would be such an ordeal…  but for some reason it really was and still so stretching for me…

I cried pretty hard that day, because I felt so overcome by this… and discouraged…  how could I be a Christian and say I love God but be so unwilling to get down and dirty and love people where there at?   That seems so accusing, and I know God is patient with me, but it troubled me deeply that I felt so controlled by it…  I felt like I only had two weeks left in Africa, and if I don’t get over this, then I failed..   which honestly is not a thought God was putting in my head…   I just get pretty impatient with myself and want to be perfect right away…

PROGRESS.
As time has gone on though, I have continued to hold the hands of these little kids, and as I have, I’ve began to feel my heart change slightly…   it’s not completely, but I see God beginning to do it…   and my big sister mary encouraged me over skype the other day and said “Courtney, you would have never realized you dealt with this unless you went there, and that little bit that you are feeling towards those people… that little bit wouldn’t be there, unless you would have went…  that little bit is a lot more than what you had…”  this was helpful to me as I tend to prefer the finished product more than the process.  God is in the process of molding my heart to truly love.

AS THE FATHER HAS SENT ME, I SEND YOU
To continue with this topic – I had a moment where I felt like things clicked even more…  just this past Friday we traveled out to a rural area, I was at a mossy foot clinic, where many people come to recover from this infection called mossy foot – it’s an intense infection that causes your feet to become very huge…   and anytime someone gets it – they are then seen as outcasts in their society (like leprosy)…   as we were at the clinic, I got to share a word with about 60 of them saying how they were a treasure to Jesus, they were His gift, and His inheritance…   as I shook each one of their hands, we stopped and prayed for one of them…  Sidney prayed “God let them know how much You love them… let them know how You accept them” – it was right then, it hit me…  when she prayed that I saw myself in my mind throwing my arms around the person and just embracing them…  and  it was so clear to me -- “I am suppose to be the one showing them how much He loves them….”   Just as Jesus came to show us the Father, He has sent us to show the people who He is…   I know this is VERY basic and most of you probably have gotten this concept…   but wow, it hit me like a ton of bricks…   so then I was like “okay, here goes”!  So then the rest of the people, rather than shaking their hands, I just embraced each one of them, and held them for a while – they just cried…  It was like God hugging them through me..  they were the outcasts of their society, and to have a white person come show them attention, and then actually hold them, was completely unheard of…    I felt like that was a mile stone in my trip, and I felt like I had more vision on the purpose of loving people with my actions and not just through prayer… we are the fragrance of Christ to the SAVED and the PERISHING.   I am not one who runs to people and want to touch their open wounds, and kiss their dirty faces…   but God is like that – so my prayer is for Him to help me to love…

5 DAYS LEFT
As I have entered into my last five days here…  I feel like I have come to  have such a love for the guards/workers on the compound – I love seeing them and just being fun..  I feel like things have become a bit normal for me here now…  we just got back from addis, and that was a different experience than when I went there at the beginning of my trip… seeing all the people in business attire, on a mission, buildings, cars and restaurants – it made me feel comfort, almost like we were a little closer to America and what I was used to.   We are now back south down in the village…  and I want to finish my last week here well..  whatever that is to look like.. we will be doing some outdoors things the next few days --  tomorrow we are going to go on a little trip – to go on some waters to see huge African crocodiles…  then possible go adventure in some waterfalls on Saturday…   in a matter of moments I will be back in the US…   as time goes by, I think I will then begin to realize all that God was doing in my heart during my trip here..

CONCLUSION – FOR NOW.
It’s been an interesting thing to see the price it takes to truly love.
it seems so honorable to go love the poor and the widow, and I can talk about it and say that loving God and loving people is necessary, but if I really look at it – I honestly I never do it…  it’s far more easier to pray for the nations, than go serve the nations with my physical strength and emotional energy (not that praying is bad, it’s very good…  but I can see that the measure of dying to self seems quite taxing in comparison to pacing in a room all day)…. being here is showing me that a life spent on truly loving people is actually quite the cross to die on…  I see how I usually do things that go right to my line of comfort and then I stop there…    I do things at my pace, and at my leisure…  at times I do things that stretch me, like give away my last scoop of coffee beans, or take someone somewhere when I have no gas in my car…   but I feel like this place is kinda upping the ante for me, and it’s having me ask myself hard questions…   this isn’t meant to be condemning towards anyone… and it’s not that we all need to go live in the nations among the poor and needy…I’m just sharing my own heart, and I know that it will probably identify with some of you..   God is patient, and He is so kind to bring me here… I am not thriving on any conclusions right now, I mainly have just questions and a heart that needs to be molded by God…   but I’m trusting that every season is necessary, and as I place my heart before Him, He will teach me and guide me….  Amen.

Closing of a Season... a New one Begins :)

hello world.
i wrote a whole thing out that was quite raw and intense...
but i erased it...
Felt like it's to be shared at another time....

so on another note!

it's been an exciting season.
i'm baffled by God's leadership in my life.
five months ago He asked me to leap another direction that seemed opposite of my dreams.
little did i realize that He planned to truly change my life..

i feel like as I have chosen to step away from the familiar it has given me perspective to really see things as they truly are...

COMING ALIVE
the other day i was walking through a golf course...  the sun was setting, and the mountains were looking blue on the horizon...  the grass was so lush and green...  and all of a sudden i found myself rolling around in that finely cut strip of lawn, just because i wanted to feel it on my skin...
sounds very simple and random i know...  but in that moment i realized something had shifted in my heart...    i think i'm learning to LIVE..   i'm learning to ENJOY life...

it's been a season of much rest... no agenda... living in an empty house all by myself..  reading the bible with fresh eyes...  daring to question what i have always heard was true...

i am finding so much liberty in my heart...  as I quiet myself to listen to Truth from His Word and His Spirit, rather than just waiting on others to teach it to me..  or quickly jumping on the next ministry vision that is promised to be the bible being fulfilled before our eyes.... many times Christianity can be defined for us by teachers or thriving ministries...  yet we don't take the time to quiet ourselves to hear God ourselves...

RESTING IS GOOD
i believe that taking a time where it's just you and Him is wise..
if you've been saturated in a ministry for a while...  giving yourself non-stop to something.
i would say that it's healthy to take break to put your heart before the Lord and to have Him show you if your ideas line up with the Word, and if your identity is in Him, or if it's in what you're doing for Him..   Find God for yourself my friends, hear the knowledge of His will as you sit quietly before Him in the secret place...  and maybe don't be so quick to facilitate how to execute His plan, but learn to agree with them in your heart behind closed doors.

i feel so thankful to God that He interrupted my "plans" -- and asked me to go the opposite direction of what I was assuming was best....    I am so grateful for His wisdom...  i truly feel like He has changed my life.

AS I STEP FORWAD
I have questioned the Lord so many times this summer "God what is next, what do you have for me??"  I realized that I had to just embrace the moment and not plan ahead...  and in perfect timing He would show me the next step...

I love the poetry of how it all unfolded...

I decided that i was just going to get a job...  i felt like i would be moving back to colorado to work in the corporate world as an administrator to save money to finish my degree in business management and get some dental work done...     i was beginning to feel peace about this but wasn't telling a soul -- realizing that when i share my ideas to too many people it just creates confusion...

then the unthinkable happened...

i had strategic dinner with a couple on a random tuesday night and everything changed..

A PREFACE.
before this dinner, i should give a backdrop..
i was in my favorite coffee shop with my sister.
i was basically yelling at her in a passionate Christian way about what greatness in the kingdom was..
i was in a swirl of sharing my opinions and questions, telling her that I think that having a platform ministry doesn't equate to greatness in the kingdom what so ever...  greatness is living the sermon on the mount...  etc. etc..

all the while there was an older man (a guy who is my dad's age) -- sitting next to us... every now and then i was looking over at his laptop to see if it was the new macbook pro with a retina screen because i want one so bad....  but then realized it wasn't a newer pro,  so i quit paying attention to him...
he got up and walked away, and my sister noticed an envelope he had that was showing his name...  she noticed the name and said "courtney, that guy is a missionary to ethiopia" -- my sis happened to have a good friend who knew this guy....

so the guy walks back and i stop him in his tracks and i say "hey, do you have any advice for us?"  i knew that he could probably hear our conversation, so he should probably have some input about it.
he was kinda taken back by me asking this question....  but then we told him that we had mutual friends and that we knew he was a missionary in ethiopia...   he began to encourage us in the Lord and beckon us to give our hearts fully to Jesus...    then he asked us our stories, and both mary and i shared a little about why we were up in Idaho...

as i shared, i saw a light go on in his head...  just something shifted, where i knew he felt some sort of connection.  he then mentioned that his wife was in a similar season as me...  and that maybe someday my sis and i could have dinner with them and possibly pray together...   i kinda dismissed the idea not being so appealed by it, but nodded and agreed that i would be up for such a thing...

weeks go by..

THE DINNER THAT SHIFTED ALL MY PLANS.
then my sister mary was like "that couple wants to have dinner with us on tuesday night.."
i have realized in these past four months in Idaho i have become quite introverted and I haven't exerted too much energy in making new friends...   i feel like it has gotten a bit unhealthy because i feel slightly anti-social and do not want to hang out with anyone other than my family, or people i know already -- i just don't want to invest in new relationships.

so anyway... mary was really wanting me to go to this dinner and she said this couple was excited to meet up with me... i was pretty hesitant and told her that i would go, but i could only hang for a couple hours (i knew the tricks of the trade, and if i put a time limit, then I can get out quick and not feel pressured to stay longer than i wanted)...  she then disagreed with this idea, so then i just told her that i would drive separate so I could leave if she wanted to stay...  i know, i know, i sound like a jerk... but that's how i felt and i prob need to work on this a bit because sometimes it's a bit overboard..

earlier that day i was praying and felt like before i move to colorado -- i think i may go on a short trip...  it seemed a little random (i knew i wanted to go on a trip in May, but God shut the door... so i pretty much just let it go)....  but that day I just felt peace, like that could possibly happen..

so we drive to this couple's condo. their names are Mark and Sidney.
these were people who lived in idaho for 18 years before they moved to Africa...
they were extremely successful up here.  owning their own contracting business where he built multi million dollar homes for people on the lake, she ran a thriving women's ministry teaching woman how to live out Proverbs 31, they had a dream house in the fort grounds area of coeur d'alene, right by the lake -- such a beautiful area...

they seemed to have quite the life from what i hear...   but then God called them to Ethiopia...so they closed down the contracting business, sold pretty much everything, and moved to ethiopia.

as they spoke to me it crossed my mind that maybe I would go to ethiopia... i knew earlier that day i was thinking of going on a trip......  but Africa????  yikes... not my top choice...  I mean Europe, New Zealand, Israel...    maybe... but africa?  no way... too dirty, and too many bugs..   but i knew that i was thinking of a trip earlier that day, so I was wondering if this actually could be God...

so after a long evening with these people -- i woke up the next morning and prayed about it..
it was the craziest thing... after waiting for so long to hear where God wanted me to go next...  ethiopia seemed like it made so much sense...  this was quite shocking to my logic, but to my heart -- it just felt like it clicked.

so i hung around Sidney the next few days at a garage sale, and i was just so fascinated by this woman. she was bold, free spirited, and very sincere in Jesus...  she is business minded, elegant, and at the same time like mother theresa, so willing to get down and dirty and serve the poor and love the least of these... i have heard a lot about greatness, to go love the poor and go low... but to see someone who has given their lives to such a thing....  was so intriguing..   i knew i could learn so much just by being around this woman...  my connection with her seemed so divine, like it was destined for me to cross paths with her..

so after much prayer...

i felt like God opened a big door for me to go LIVE in ethiopia for a while..

but it was a different kind of trip.
He wasn't inviting me to go there with an ministry agenda like you would a "missions" trip..
He invited me to just go live there. and breathe the air.. to enjoy Him, and to listen to Him as I see His creation on the other side of the earth.... and from this place, learning to be open to let Him minister to those around me out of an overflow of "being"..

this seemed like a different approach to me for sure -- but it seemed so right so I decided --
"I am going to go"!

THE POETRY IN IT ALL.
it was crazy because the day that I got the go ahead in my heart to make a decision happened to play part in a theme...   it was August 10th I decided to go to Africa, and two years ago on SAME DAY - August 10th, i decided to take the leap of faith to move from KC to Colorado...

it just made me feel the reality that God is SO involved...  He knew what my next step would be, but He kindly gave me the answer on August 10th...  He perfectly wrote my story, and it's exciting to see how unfolds it!

though ethiopia wasn't in my grid of plans, I am realizing God kinda works that way...   when it seems so crazy an unexpected, it's not far off to think that God may be inviting us to an adventure we would have never imagined.

THE PRACTICAL PLAN
so i will be heading to Ethiopia in two weeks..  Sept 12- Oct 16..  I will be living with Mark and Sidney Launder.

They have a house in a village called Soddo.  They do not live in a compound like many missionaries would.  They actually live amongst the poor people... surrounded by mud huts...  they simply live life there, sharing the gospel to those they meet, loving on the poor, praying for the sick, and they show the Jesus Film to those in their surrounding area..  I will go and just be with them as they live...

What's the plan after i get back?? Well, i feel like God doesn't want me to plan for after this trip -- I was tryingH to, and I quickly felt the familiar invitation from Him to not plan too far ahead...  that's how He's been doing it these days...

I am trying to raise $3000 for this trip -  I still have a ways to go.
If you'd like to sow financially into this trip... let me know..  It's a little different because usually you sow into what a person is "doing" -- but I would ask you to pray about sowing into "my life" and what God is wanting to reveal in Africa...   i am highly expectant that what He has in store is going to drastically impact my life....

if you're interested in partnering with me financially please email me at burdeejewels@gmail.com
Time is a bit short -- I have two weeks to raise these funds, so know that any amount of $ is helpful :)

Also another practical way to support is by buying super trendy earring from my etsy shop :)  This will all go towards helping me go to Ethiopia. You can find those here -->  Burdee Earrings!

whoever is reading this -- thanks for taking the time to listem to my thoughts :)
bless you guys!

purpose.

i'm about to ramble..  here goes.

learning to live in the moment.
it's easy for me to look forward and try to plan.
when i attempt to do so, clarity is slim.

i'm realizing that no matter what you're doing.
full time ministry or not.
there is always a driving thing in us trying to find purpose and significance aka "identity".
most christians who are sincere - have a hovering question in their hearts.
"what is my calling"?

most people do their mundane routine day by day...  they are so busy they don't think of what their purpose is.   but there are moments, where they are driving in the car, taking a walk, or right before bed when they blackout their iphone screen -- they begin to wonder "what am i doing with my life?" there has to be more to this?

it seems like there is this idea we have, where we need to reach a certain point in life where we have arrived to what we were destined for.  and all the while we are neglecting the practical moments in front of us to invest in eternal greatness that will never be taken away.

why do we think going on mission trips for two months is more valuable in the eyes of God, than a mom at home who is cooking, cleaning, working hard for her husband day in and day out... and the husband forgets to pick up his socks after the millionth time...  yet she chooses to love and be patient in that moment, sticking the socks in the hamper and blessing her husband instead?

why do we think leading worship for thousands of people equals greatness, and all the while we lend a person $20 and you better bet your bottom dollar that we won't let them forget it, until they pay us back every penny.. i mean, if you lend, shouldn't they return?  uhhhh.

we get commended and bragged about when we have done things that seem "big" in our eyes.
it's not often you hear a mom getting publicly complimented for her constant selflessness.
you never really hear people giving props to the man who is poor in spirit, who hungers, mourns, and doesn't demand his right, in an introduction before he speaks at a church or conference.

selah...

i do believe that we are to do great exploits for God.  yes yes yes.   look at the new testament.  booya!  so much of that is in there -- it is an expression of the kingdom of God on the earth, and i know God wants it :)  however, i do remember hearing Jesus say to those He sent out on "mission trips" --  "do not rejoice at the fact that spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that you're names are recorded in heaven."

big crowds are awesome.  more people being impacted for the kingdom is AMAZING! Jesus is worthy of having eternal worshippers all over the earth...
i have an age old desire that wants to impact the globe.
heaven rejoices when a soul gets saved, so it's obviously an awesome thing and lines up with God's heart and desire to be one who evangelizes.. However we must realize that the teachers, pastors, evangelists, prophets and so on are "sons" first they are His "bride" and out of the overflow of that, they teach, preach, prophesy... So as i do things for God... I must know that this is an overflow from my life in God...  my purpose is God.. i was made through Him and for Him...  and from the overflow of being satisfied in Him alone, i will impact those around me..

I love when Jesus was baptized and when He came out of the water the Father thundered His voice and said "this is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased" -- Jesus was a carpenter.. and faithful to taking care of His mother... Wow what a dull life to most of us with high vision... Yet the Father, who has the perfect scale and balance says that Jesus was pleasing to Him.

i see so many people distraught as they are in wonder about their "calling in life" -- however, i am taking time to step back and wonder about this....     do you think God didn't give them the opportunity to live their calling now?  to love Him with all their heart, soul mind and strength and to love others as He did, right now?  or do they feel that doing that isn't the fulfillment of their calling?  and it must be that in correlation with impacting the multitudes...  or at least something that has value in our eyes of what is big for God?

God is so smart.. the sermon on the mount (matt 5, 6, 7) -- can be lived out by any human.... rich, poor, great, and small..   we all have the chance to be great in the kingdom (which lasts forever).... even if before the eyes of men it seems like we are losers.

i think sometimes there is a sneaky thing that can happen where we feel better about ourselves when we do things that seem big, and super selfless... and yet all the while we are stroking our wounded insecure hearts that have no clue who we really are in God...

Jesus. be our vision.  then from that, we will impact the world.

amen.
